Looking at people who belong to us, we see the past, present and future." -- Gail Lumet BuckleyLisa Swanson Ellamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13845774053431903046noreply@blogger.comBlogger285125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-119019443536726183.post-341227886058909102020-05-18T14:31:00.000-04:002020-05-18T14:31:21.129-04:00Covid-19It's been years since I have written in this blog. Life gets in the way sometimes but currently, the date is May 18, 2020. Years from now people will be talking about this time in the history of the world. This is the time of Covid-19.

The world has been on lockdown since March trying to stem the spreading of the disease and attempting to "flatten the curve". For the past 2 months, we have been at home. Some of us continuing our full-time jobs from our living rooms, kitchens, and home offices. We have learned more about the world of Zoom meetings then we would ever want to know. And, ironically, the value in a roll of toilet paper which continues to be in short supply.

It's hard to document what life is like right now. Anything becomes normal after a time. Only essential businesses are open but visiting a pharmacy or grocery store requires wearing a mask. X marks made with tape are found on the floors with signs reminding you to keep 6 feet between you and the people around you. Limits to the number of people in a place of business means waiting in line outside the store until it is safe for you to enter.

Social distancing has kept us from visiting and hugging our family members. For some, those members are in nursing homes who ceased allowing visitors in March. So many people are fighting for their lives, and some losing that battle, alone in hospitals. Visitors are not allowed.

Weddings, funerals, and baptisms have been canceled. The churches are not open and gatherings of groups are not allowed. This past weekend my University, Notre Dame, held its first-ever virtual degree conferral. There is no commencement for the Class of 2020 around the world.

Large companies like JC Penny and Macy's are filing for bankruptcy. Many small businesses will never reopen. The economy has been hard hit. Even the government has extended tax filings from May 15 to July 15. The US government has issued stimulus checks in the amount of $1200 per adult and $500 per child. There is rumor of a second round of checks being sent.

Such is life during a world pandemic.

We don't yet know what will happen next. Phase 2 of slowly reopening the world has just begun. For those of us living now only looking back from the future will tell us if we have been successful in defeating the disease.

For now, we watch the nightly news and wonder what our new normal will be when we begin to cautiously emerge from our homes. And for those of us who find extra time on our hands we attempt to document for future generations what this time in our lives is like.

This post deals with another tragic death of a Ralph ELLAM. This Ralph ELLAM is my husband's great-great-great grandfather (and also the great-grandfather of young Ralph above).

Born 1 May 1823 in St. Helens, England, Ralph was one of 9 children born to Ralph ELLAM (1788-1846) and Elizabeth HUGHES (1791 - ?). He grew up poor and illiterate, never learning to write his own name.

On 1 Jan 1853 at the age of 29 he married Elizabeth GREENALL in the Chapel of Farnsworth, Prescot, Lancaster, England.

After his marriage he continued his work as a miner and he and Elizabeth welcomed three children:

Alice born in 1855
Elizabeth in 1857
William 29 Jul 1858 (my husband's great-great grandfather)

Tragedy struck on Tuesday, 12 Apr 1859. On that day Ralph reported to work at the Broad Oak Mines in St. Helens, England. Sometime during the day he fell off a roof in the mine causing instant death. He was 35 years old.
An inquest was held on 14 Apr 1859 (the same day he was buried) and found the death was accidental. William was only 9 months old at the time of his father's death.

Ralph is buried in St. Helens Cemetery and his Find A Grave memorial can be found here.

Elizabeth remarried one year later to Lambert HEATON, the only father William knew.

18 years after his death Elizabeth finally received the effects of Ralph's estate. Effects valued ess than £50 (less than $82 US today).

For years the information I had for John was:

Father - John ELLAM (1883-1933)
Mother - Ada Bailey ELLAM (1886 - 1967)

Brother - William H. ELLAM (1909 - 1969)

Recently I discovered there was another brother!

Ralph ELLAM (1907 - ?)

I found Ralph's birth record in the England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915.

I also found an immigration record of his arrival on 3 Jun 1911 along with his mother Ada and brothers John and William:

What I can't locate is his date of death. Family lore says young Ralph fell out of an apple tree around the age of 12-13, broke his neck and died. That would place his date of death between 1919-1920. I can find his parents John and Ada in the 1920 census in Bridgeport, CT. However, none of the boys are listed with them.

Where and when did Ralph die and where is he buried? The search continues....Lisa Swanson Ellamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13845774053431903046noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-119019443536726183.post-68773536313239946442013-11-02T08:00:00.000-04:002013-11-03T13:32:24.395-05:00Society Saturday - Preserve the Pensions - Indiana Steps Up!

Within minutes from my home there is:

The South Bend Area Genealogical Society
The Elkhart Genealogical Society
The South Bend DAR
The Elkhart DAR
The South Bend Library Genealogy Rountable
The Mishawaka Library Genealogy Roundtable
The Twigs from the Tree of Life Genealogy Group
The GENSIG (Genealogy Special Interest Group)

That's eight groups each holding monthly meetings including classes and speakers. Two of those groups hold a yearly event that brings in speakers from outside the area, charge a fee and include vendors. Two of these groups host an Allen County Bus Trip - held within a month of each other.

Recently I was asked the question - Can we get these groups to work together? Is it possible?

Of all the groups mentioned the Twigs group seems most promising. The group meets monthly and focuses on genealogy education. There are no fees or dues to join and includes members from all the above genealogy groups. Twigs has somehow been able to cross county lines and bring together those with a common interest in genealogy. But does it have what it takes to lead the initiative to get all groups to work together? Does it have the "chops" to lead the charge?

Thinking of the two separate yearly events and the two separate Allen County Bus Trips. What if those two groups combined forces and resources? Imagine what could be accomplished by working together. What caliber of speaker could be brought in to one combined yearly event? Imagine filling a bus for Allen County with members from all groups. Getting to know each other, the camaraderie which could develop!

While each group has its own focus and identity, by staying fragmented in all areas are the groups really doing what is best for each of its members? Is it possible to form a cohort with representation from each of the groups to look at this question?

Is it possible to work together?

1. I learn new things.

Conferences offer topics in areas that I need help with and opportunities to learn from the best in the business. Looking at the upcoming FGS Conference in Fort Wayne, IN August 21-24, I anticipate attending sessions on Ohio Research, Land Records, and Using DNA in Genealogy. All topics I am interested in learning more about. Over the course of 4 days I will be able to choose from over 160 different sessions to attend! So much learning is available at a conference.

2. I'm reminded of old things.

At the IGS Conference one of the best sessions I attended was presented by D. Joshua Taylor. In this final session of the day, he discussed developing management goals. For every one hour spent in a library doing research 2 hours should be set aside for preparing to research, analyzing data and compiling your results. This was just the reminder I needed to avoid those piles of information the come home with me after a research trip. I can never be reminded enough about the importance of citing my resources and using a research log. I always return home from a genealogy conference with a renewed sense of the need to return to the basics with my research.

3. I'm surrounded by like-minded people.

When I posed the question of why a genealogy conference to a friend she didn't hesitate to reply "to be with like-minded people". She's right! I love the interaction with others interested in family history. While I'm usually hesitant to start up conversations with people I don't know I find myself starting conversations with strangers at a genealogy conference! I know that we have something in common before I even approach them which puts me at ease. The opportunity to speak with someone sitting next to you in a session or sharing a table at lunch should not be missed! There is so much we can learn from each other. Young or old, seasoned or just beginning their genealogy adventure I have never walked away from a conversation without learning something new.

4. The vendors.

Everyone who knows me knows I hate to shop. But not at a genealogy conference! I make plenty of time to visit with the vendors. I devour their offerings every free moment I have! At IGS I picked up a book of county maps for Indiana from 1876 that shows the small town my ancestors lived in that is no longer in existence. It shows where the church was and, more importantly, where the cemeteries are located. All for the bargain price of $10.00!

5. The cost.

But wait, you say, everyone knows how expensive a trip to a genealogy conference can be. Not true. Take, for example, my upcoming trip to FGS in August. When I add up the cost of registration, hotel, travel expenses, and meals and divide that by the 21 hours of the wonderful education I will receive at the 21 sessions I will attend I realize I'm getting a bargain. The opportunity to learn from the likes of Crista Cowan (Ancestry), Devin Ashby (Family Tree Maker), Cyndi Ingle Howells (Cyndi's List) and Curt Witcher (Allen County Public Library) as well as D. Joshua Taylor, Elizabeth Shown Mills and Tom Jones is priceless. Most speakers are happy to answer questions you have following the sessions or in the event hall. I will take advantage of that and get even more for my conference investment.

Overall, a genealogy conference leaves me with a renewed excitement for tackling my own research. Whether it's by utilizing a new research technique I learned or learning more about a particular topic from a book I purchased, I'm ready to tackle those brick walls with renewed energy and dive in and flesh out the stories of my ancestors to record and share with my descendants.

And that, after all, is what this hobby of mine is all about!

Amy's presentation was sponsored by the St. Joseph County Public Library and the South Bend Area Genealogical Society in conjunction with this years One Book, One Michiana event.

I have so many civil war ancestors (53 at last count) that I have a separate tab on this blog to keep track of them! I have completed an online class on researching civil war ancestors, own many books on the subject and have years of research behind me. But I learned so much from Amy on Saturday!

I learned more about the draft and why my ancestor might appear on the draft record but never in a regiment. I learned more about the GAR then I ever knew including the fact that they were integrated at a time when segregation was the norm! I learned to pay more attention to those county histories instead of just skimming the index for my ancestors name.

Mostly I had a wonderful time with my genealogy friends talking about our ancestors who fought in the war and learning about research strategies from one of the best!

Thank you Amy for an enjoyable Saturday!
I totally missed it.....

Although my postings have been few and far between over the past year this blog is still very important to me.

I spend part of each day on either actual research or further education through webinars and attending local society meetings and classes. It's just the writing that has taken a back seat!

I vow to do a better job of recording my own discoveries and stories, after all, it's what I love best about other genealogy blogs!Lisa Swanson Ellamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13845774053431903046noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-119019443536726183.post-21124671777277395132013-01-18T09:00:00.000-05:002013-01-18T09:00:07.024-05:00My Latest Genealogical Obsession!Where have I been for the last two months? Researching, researching, researching!

My latest obsession are the Indiana Marriage Record images on Familysearch.org! Of course the counties I'm researching in are not yet indexed by name, but that hasn't stopped me from searching those images looking for the marriage records on my ancestors.

So far, knock on wood, I have been successful in locating everyone I have looked for. Along the way I have even stumbled upon marriage records I didn't know about. I've discovered both maiden names and date of marriage that were missing from my database.

I've spent countless hours at this and I'm no where near done.

Am I obsessed? You bet.
This past spring/summer I took the plunge and had the bible restored. It wasn't cheap but the finished restoration is priceless!
When I received the bible the spine was missing. Sections of the bible were no longer attached and most were in the wrong order. Because the pages were flaking off I didn't try reconstructing the correct order.

When the bible was restored it was put back into the correct order and it was discovered that the first 16 pages were missing entirely. This means I don't know exactly when the bible was printed or when it came into the family. However, the front inside cover does show this:

It's a clue that as early as 1907 it was in the Brane family possession.

The before and after is just amazing.
He and my great-great grandmother, Mary Mariah BOTKIN had my great-grandfather, Pearl, out of wedlock.

When Pearl was 19, William and Mariah finally married. Until that time Pearl used the last name of BOTKIN. After his parents married he began using STEPHENS as his last name.

I contacted the Wabash County, Indiana Courthouse asking if they had the following records....

They responded within a week letting me know that they did not find either record. The only thing they did find was an arrest record for William.

Sadly most of those photos were unmarked and, of course, storing them in a backpack was not the best way to preserve them.

At the very bottom of the backpack I found this photo:

It is torn in half with the corner missing. The photo is of John William WALKER my husband's great grandfather.

William was born 17 May 1876 in Burley, Yorkshire, England. He died 5 Sep 1945 in Bridgeport, CT.

As far as I know, this is the earliest photo anyone in the family has of William.

Here is the photo after restoration:

I'm trying to locate the family of Nancy Jean. This is what I know....

Nancy Jean was the daughter of Clarence Lee BOTKIN and Lillian Unknown. Nancy Jean was in Illinois until the 1940 census and may have moved with her parents to Kansas after that. She had a brother Clarence L. who passed away in 1948.
