52 Weeks of Abundant Genealogy - Week 3 - Free Online Genealogy Tools

It's week 3 of Amy Coffin's 52 Weeks of Abundant Genealogy prompts.

Week 3 - Free Online Genealogy Tools: Free online genealogy tools are like gifts from above.  Which one are you most thankful for?  How has it helped your family history experience?

My favorite Free Online Genealogy tool is the Soldiers and Sailors website. I can currently count 43 of my ancestors that fought in the Civil War, both on the Union and Confederate sides.  I found all of them listed on the Soldiers and Sailors website.  Brothers and cousins fought alongside each other often in the same unit.  By finding one of my ancestors on the site and then searching the unit they were in, I can trace families.

The website, a collaboration of the National Park Service and public and private partners, contains over 6.3 million soldiers names from the National Archives.  Besides the names, the site includes information about the Regiments and the battles they fought in.

If you are searching for your own Civil War ancestors or you are just a Civil War buff, be sure and check out the site!
